How We Help Kids
Variety disburses much-needed funding to children and their families throughout BC through individual grants and the Emergency Response Fund. Every year, Variety disburses over 1,300 grants for medical emergencies, therapies, specialized equipment, drug prescriptions, and out-of-town accommodation and travel costs. Variety also provides grants to children’s organizations for construction, renovations, equipment, and program costs.
Building Stronger Communities
Variety has spearheaded capital campaigns to build BC Children’s Hospital, Canuck Place, Down Syndrome Research Institute & Foundation Centre, BC Family Hearing Resource Centre, and the Variety Gastroenterology and Liver Research Laboratory at BC Children’s Hospital. These places help children receive the care they require and enable them to lead healthier and happier lives.
Neonatal Intensive Care Units and Child Development Centres
Variety has funded the building of child development centres and has equipped Neonatal Intensive Care Units with fetal heart monitors, incubators, and other lifesaving equipment in almost every hospital throughout the province.
Sunshine Coaches
More than 530 specially equipped vans have been placed on the roads of BC to help transport children in comfort and safety to places of therapy, education, and recreation.
Major Events and Fundraisers
Variety holds over 200 special events a year. Variety’s major events and fundraisers include the Annual Variety Show of Hearts Telethon, BC Bowls for Kids, Kids Coin Drive for Variety, Variety Children’s Radiothons, Gold Heart Day, Variety Auction & Vintage Market presented by Buy-Low Foods, Boat for Hope and the Golden Heart Community Achievement Award Dinner.
Special Events and Volunteers
More than 4,000 dedicated individuals volunteer at over 200 annual fundraising events throughout BC in support of Variety.
