Kalenna has a very severe case of a neurological condition called Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) and was almost completely nonverbal until she was six years old. The only treatment for CAS is intensive one on one speech therapy multiple times a week.
Because speech therapy is not covered by extended health and costs upwards of $125/hour, her family was struggling to get Kalenna the care at the frequency that she needed. A grant from Variety has allowed Kalenna to see a speech therapist consistently two times per week, and she is doing amazingly well!
Now Kalenna is talking more than ever. She has developed more in the past year because of the care she has been able to receive than she did in her first six years with the condition without the intensive therapy. Her family is so grateful that their daughter is able to use her voice and communicate what she wants more and more every day!
