Public school wasn’t always the right fit for Sawyer and Ryker. These outgoing brothers from Vancouver Island are both on the Autism spectrum and their learning differences weren’t being addressed in the public system. Their parents enrolled them in an independent school to get specialized support they needed but the additional cost of private education was constraining the family.
With donor support, Variety funded Sawyer’s and Ryker’s bursary grants so they could attend a specialized school. The boys receive additional structure at school which provides them with the most optimal learning conditions possible. The support for their academic success is carried over into their social, emotional and physical health. As confident, contributing members of their classes, Sawyer and Ryker are able to interact successfully with others and have less anxiety thanks to the inclusiveness of their schools.
