Donating your life insurance

When you donate a life insurance policy, it isn’t subject to taxes, probate costs, or estate debts, yet you’ll still receive charitable tax receipts. It’s the ideal way to make a substantial contribution through small monthly or yearly payments.

Here are three ways to donate your policy:

  1. Take out a new policy in the name of “Variety – the Children’s Charity of BC”.
  2. Name Variety BC as the beneficiary of an existing policy.
  3. Transfer ownership of an existing policy to Variety BC.

Donating financial assets

By naming “Variety – the Children’s Charity of BC” as a beneficiary of your RRSP, RRIF, or pension, you can offset the taxes that your estate would otherwise pay on these assets. Discuss this option with your financial advisor or lawyer to find out if it’s right for you.

Setting up a Donor-Advised Fund

This option allows you to donate a lump sum now that can be distributed over several years. When you make a donation using this type of fund, you receive a tax receipt and can then allocate the funds to Canadian registered charities of your choice.
